Why do we need national and state human rights acts?
Without national and state legislation of this type, human rights promotion and protection in Australia will continue to be piecemeal at best.
Human rights acts are likely to improve public services, promote more responsive and accountable governments, and address disadvantage.
The evidence from the UK Audit Commission, the British Institute of Human Rights, and the ACT and Victorian Human Rights Commissions is that the promotion of a human rights culture through human rights legislation leads to better public services and outcomes.
The kind of human rights act recommended by the national consulation will foster conversations between the community and government about how best to promote and protect human rights and the interests of the community.
The Human Rights Law Resource Centre provides a more detailed explanation of the benefits of human rights acts.
