The 2020 Summit held in 2008 called for Australia to have a Bill of Rights. This was a welcome and timely call given we are the only democracy that does not have a bill or human rights act to promote and protect human rights.
The Federal Government responded by initiating a National Consultation on Rights, chaired by Frank Brennan, on 10 December 2008.
The national consultation has now concluded after over 35,000 submissions were made by organisations and individuals. Overwhelmingly, people called for a national human rights act to better promote and protect rights. Click here to read the National Consultation on Rights Report.
We are now awaiting the Federal Government response.
This web site explains what human rights are and what it can mean if they are not adequately protected. We also show you how you can contribute to the push for better human rights promoton and protection in Australia and Queensland.
A fair go = human rights is a Queensland campaign supported by a number of Queensland organisations committed to human rights. It also links in with the national human rights campaign of the Australian Human Rights Group.
The message to the Federal and State Governments is simple. Human rights are nothing more than the time-honoured Australian tradition of the fair go. Let's ACT on this tradition.
