Amnesty Women’s Rights Breakfast
As part of the annual 16 days of Activism to Stop Violence Against Women, Amnesty is holding a breakfast which to be addressed by two well-respected advocates of women’s rights.

Screening of Hope
On the occasion of Human Rights Day 2008, the Refugee Action Collective (Qld) presents a special screening of Steve Thomas' much praised documentary, Hope - the unforgettable story of the remarkable Amal Basry, mother, Iraqi refugee and survivor of the infamous SIEV-X tragedy. In addition to the film, updates will be given by high-profile refugee rights activists on the status of the campaign for refugee rights in Australia.

"Every Human has Rights" - Human Rights Day Forum and Supper
JRQ, in partnership with Amnesty International and QCCL, are pleased to announce the holding of a public forum and supper to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The free public forum is being held at the Sebel Citigate Hotel, Brisbane, from 6.30 pm on Wednesday 10 December. We will hear from our speakers - Her Excellency Ms Penelope Wensley AO, Governor of Queensland, Phillip Adams AO and Stephen Keim SC - from 7pm. Following the forum, at 8.30 pm, the supper is an opportunity to hear from and acknowledge the work of human rights activists who have contributed to the advancement of various human rights during the year. The supper is $35 per person.

The International Commission of Jurists Qld Inc is holding a seminar on Monday, 28 July 2008 from 6pm on Australia’s International Obligations Regarding Capital Punishment and Transnational Policing. Michael Walton from NSW Council of Civil Liberties will be speaking. See the flyer for more details.

A fundraising dinner to support humanitarian relief in Burma following Cyclone Nargis is being held at 7 pm, 27 June at the Holt & Heath Rooms, Aung San Suu Kyi Building, University of Queensland, St Lucia. See the flyer for more information and to RSVP.

JRQ co-sponsored Synergising World Peace - an overview of the Ministry for Peace Principles. Campaigners for governments to have a Minister for Peace held a forum on 21 June at the Multi-Faith Centre, Nathan Campus Griffith University. See the flyer for more.

A candle vigil for Zimbabwe was held at Brisbane Square from 5pm on Friday 20 June. The vigil highlighted the killing, torture and other human rights abuses that are escalating there. To be involved in further vigils and forums please email us.

The Institute of Legal Studies presented the inaugural public lecture by Professor Spencer Zifcak on Framing a Global Rule of Law at 6.30pm on 12 June at the Bar Common Room, Inns of Court, 107 North Quay.

JRQ co-sponsored a human rights comedy debate: Who needs another bill? Should we have a bill of rights or should we just have a good laugh? The debate was held at 7pm, 10 June at the Irish Club, 175 Elizabeth Street. See the flyer for details.

Australians Supporting Zimbabwe is a group established to provide humanitarian and free speech support for people in Zimbabwe in the period prior to the Presidential Run-Off. A Walk for Peace and Unity in Zimbabwe was held at South Bank and Davies Park on Sunday 8 June. Download the flyer on ASZ to find out what we are trying to do and how you can help.

JRQ was represented at the National Charter of Human Rights Roundtable, co-hosted on 2 June by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission and the Gilbert + Tobin Centre of Public Law in Sydney. The Steering Group established for the national campaign resolved to meet monthly.

Australians against Capital Punishment hosted the China and the Death Penalty Forum to look at the Chinese Government’s record on human rights. The forum was held on Thursday 29 May at the Irish Club, 175 Elizabeth St with speakers from Amnesty International, Falun Dafa and the Australian Tibet Council. 2008 was the 60th anniversary of the creation of the state of Israel, an event referred to as The Nakba (Arabic for the "disaster", "catastrophe", or "cataclysm") by Palestinians. To highlight the human right issues of both Jewish and Palestinian people, JRQ supported and promoted Al Nakba activities during 13-15 May.

The Burmese Solidarity Group of Queensland held an event involving speakers and music to highlight Burmese issues at 1pm, Saturday 10 May in Queens Park, near Treasury Casino.

At the 5 May JRQ general meeting, the decision was made to initiate the new Fair Go campaign (see above).

The Hon. Dean Wells, (previously Attorney-General in Qld) spoke on Reasonable assaults: The law relating to corporal punishment in Queensland at 6pm, Wednesday 30 April at the Gibson Room, Level 10, Z Block, Gardens Point, QUT.

Following the 2020 summit, there were a number of debriefs locally, including that hosted by Griffith University Multi Faith Centre and the International Day of Peace Alliance at 10am Saturday 26 April at Nathan Campus, Griffith University.

Vision Generation and World Vision Australia hosted a forum on how to combat The global trafficking of men, women and children at 6pm, Wednesday 9 April at Clairvaux McKillop College, Cnr Klumpp and Logan Rd, Mt. Gravatt, with speakers including Tim Costello.

JRQ supported the Global day of action for Tibet. In Brisbane, a forum was hosted by the Australia Tibet Council at 12.30 pm, 31 March in Brisbane Square.

JRQ co-sponsored the Harmony of Voices and Sounds celebration of Harmony Day at the Multi-Faith Centre, Griffith University, from 7.15 to 9.15 pm on 26 March.

The World of Difference 2008 Forum was held from Saturday 15 March to Sunday 16 March at the University of Queensland. This was a weekend of discussion, debate and planning for making positive social change in 2008, and included a debate on the universality of human rights.

A Forum on Compassion and Solidarity for the Burmese Sangha and People: An Update on the Situation in Burma was held on Thursday, 13th March 2008 7.15 – 9.00pm, at Multi-Faith Centre, Griffith University, Nathan Campus.

A JRQ general meeting to determine our priorities for 2008 was held at 6pm, Monday 4 February at St Mary’s Church Office, corner of Merivale and Peel Streets, South Brisbane. The priorities from this meeting are shown in Our Program.
