Children's Rights in the 21st Century

An important forum on children's rights was held at the Undumbi Room, Parliamentary Annexe, Alice Street, Brisbane on Thursday 15 February.

Just Rights Queensland partnered with Concerned Psychologists Queensland for Children's Rights to present a number of areas where the rights of children need some urgent consideration if we are to move forward in this area so important to our future.

Speakers and topics included:

Professor Ross Homel (Governance, Ethics – Griffith University)
As if children mattered ...social justice for disadvantaged children”

Honorable Dean Wells MP (Former Queensland Attorney General)
“The scourge of corporal punishment”

Elizabeth Frazer (Commissioner - Children & Young People & Child Guardian) Upholding children’s rights: clear mandate, complex issue”

Media coverage

This event received significant media interest (see below for links to stories). The Courier Mail weblogs showed that many parents passionately care about how their children are raised but are not familiar with the rights issues or all of the options available to them.

Rights of the child at risk of being neglected: Epoch Times, 14 February 2007
End spanking call: Courier Mail, 13 February 2007

Ongoing campaign

This issue will continue to be raised by JRQ, with a human rights act workshop on the topic likely later in 2007.
