Working together for Indigenous Self-determination

On 27 January 2007, a landmark workshop was held to begin a process to support Indigenous Self-Determination in Queensland.

Just Rights Queensland along with Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation (ANTaR) and the Australian Democrats were proud to be involved in holding this workshop to give members of Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities an opportunity to learn and discuss what self-determination means.

The workshop was auspiced by the Foundation for Aboriginal and Islander Research Action (FAIRA) and featured the following headline speakers:

  • Les Malezer (FAIRA) on the draft UN treaty on Indigenous Self-Determination that he has been actively promoting
  • Mary Graham on the Oslo agreement and how it can be viewed as a model for negotiating Self-Determination in Australia
  • Jacqui Katona on the implications and challenges of Self-Determination.

If you would like to see the flyer, read a summary of the outcomes of the workshop, or look at Mary Graham's paper please click on one of the the following buttons.

A link to the draft UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People can be found in the section on human rights agreements.

A working group has been established to look at next steps in Working Together for Indigenous Self-Determination and has been meeting monthly.

Apart from supporting events organised by Indigenous communities, a major initiative of WTFISD has been hosting monthly talking circles to aid understanding and dialogue. Details on the next talking circle is shown in the events section.
